UPDATE TO MEDIA ON THE CASE OF THE SPECIAL INVESTIGATION UNIT
The Municipality of Cederberg took an in-principle decision to haul the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) before the courts because it found the methods employed by the Unit as unacceptable and contrary to the objects of the Constitution.
The parties have decided to settle the matter before court in a bid to amongst other things curtail legal expenses. To this end the case is most likely to be settled in court tomorrow, Friday, 9 October 2020 and each party will pay its own cost.
The Municipality’s goods which were initially confiscated were returned in record time, considering the length that other State Institutions had to wait for their goods to be returned after it was confiscated by the SIU.
The Municipality remains committed to assist the SIU and other law enforcement agencies with lawfully authorized investigations. The Municipality will always insist that the rights and dignity of each and every staff member and Councillor are respected and protected in line with the dictates of the Constitution.
