MEDIA STATEMENT - Water tankers and water tanks handed over to West Coast Municipalities

Today 05 April 2020, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) handed over water tanks and water tankers to Cederberg and Matzikama Local Municipalities, West Coast. In an effort to curb the spread of the COVID -19 in the Western Cape, which as recorded the second largest number of infections in the country, (DWS) in conjunction with Provincial Government of the Western Cape are dispatching water tankers to the Cape Metro and District municipalities to enable water supply particularly in informal settlements.

According to Ms Ntombizanele - Bila Mupariwa, DWS Western Cape Acting Provincial Head, to date 130 water tankers have been dispatched across the Western Cape, with some municipalities including Drakenstein Local Municipality already supplying water from the water tanks.

Nosipho Quntu, Executive Mayor of Cederberg Local Municipality says she is happy with the delivery of the water tanks and a tanker as this will ensure the community of Cederberg Local Municipality receive uninterrupted water supply.

The Western Cape has received second batch of additional 18 water tankers and the distribution of the water tanks and tankers started this morning, 05 April 2020.

According to Bila - Mupariwa, the co - operation between different spheres of Government has been amazing from the onset. 'We will continue to hold hands with our Provincial and Local government counterparts of the Western Cape as we are working towards a common goal,"says Bila - Mupariwa.

The allocations of the water tanks to district municipalities and the Cape Metro remains the same with Garden Route receiving 78, Overberg 60, West Coast 42, Cape Winelands 75 and Central Karoo 50. The Cape Town Metro is allocated a lion's share of 244 water tanks as it has the largest number of informal settlements without access to adequate clean water.

Western Cape Minister of Human Settlements, Tertuis Simmers says, "I am pleased with the rate at which the tanks are being delivered to areas where it is critically needed. I will be visiting various communities and locations to ensure that the tanks are delivered and those who should be benefiting from this initiative, are indeed doing so.

This provision will undoubtedly strengthen improved hygiene practices, while also encouraging social distancing, given the access to more water points, so that the spread of COVID -19 can be prevented. We have to #Stop The Spread".

As a Safety measure, monitoring and testing of water samples will be taken to ensure that portable water is delivered to consumers.

Furthermore, all Western Cape water users are reminded that the Province have survived the worst drought in memory in 2017 -18. Citizens are urged to conserve water whilst embarking on good hygiene practices.
